Old Farm is a unique medieval hall house standing in 10 acres of completely unspoilt Somerset countryside under Glastonbury Tor with views across to Wells Cathedral. Glastonbury is reputed to be the first Christian settlement in England, the Abbey was established in the 10th century, the whole area is steeped in spirituality. Old Farm was built by the monks of Glastonbury Abbey in 1345 and was used by pilgrims as a resting place. Over the last six centuries the estate has been a working farm but has now come full circle and we have re-established it as a place for rest, quiet and contemplation.
Since being built the farm has seen 30 kings and queens and 1 republic (Cromwell!) and survived civil wars, world wars, earthquake and flood before eventually falling into disrepair during the mid 1900s and being put onto English Heritage's Buildings at Risk register. We bought Old Farm three years ago and have renovated and restored it with advice from English Heritage and Mendip Council. Our overall aim was to be as empathetic as possible to the buildings, environment and history of Old Farm. It is a located in a very special place with no roads nearby, plenty of walking and still today provides visitors with an opportunity to sit in absolute peace and quiet and enjoy the solitude and beauty of the nature of this area.
The original Cider House and Cheese House of the farm have been converted to provide detached, self contained accommodation for up to 6 in each house. Old Farm provides visitors with a chance to "step back in time" and enjoy a slower pace of life while retaining the luxuries of modern day living.
We are continually working on restoring the farm and have recently planted a 5 acre traditional cider orchard as well as recreating a natural pond, a conservation area and planting traditional hedgerows. Old Farm is home to our family along with our ever increasing collection of ducks, chickens, bees, dogs, cats, sheep and donkeys.
We always provide a welcome hamper which includes local and homegrown produce whenever possible - assuming our chickens co-operate!
